Italy /ˈɪtəli/ (Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in south-central Europe. To the north, its surrounding countries are France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia along the Alps as its shown in the map of Italy and surrounding countries. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia–the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea–and many other smaller islands. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italy, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland.

The relationship between France and Italy is very active, as fitting given the cooperation between these two major neighbouring partners which are EU founding members and have close economic, cultural and historical ties as its mentioned in the map of Italy and surrounding countries. Bilateral cooperation sees an annual summit, which was enshrined in Rome in February 1982. While the traditionally good relations between Switzerland and Italy are characterised by close economic, political, human and cultural ties, a common language and frequent visits at all levels.
 
Since the Middle Ages, Austria had a great influence over the Italian states, especially in the north of the country. Italy fought three wars against Austria for its Unification. During World War I, Italy fought against Austria–Hungary despite their alliance some decades earlier. By World War I end, Italy gained new territories from Austria and border agreements were secured as you can see in the map of Italy and surrounding countries. Italy and Slovenia established diplomatic relations in 1992. Italy has an embassy in Ljubljana and a consulate in Koper. Both surrounding countries are full members of the European Union and NATO.
